Laurie Kain is a mixed media sculptor and painter working in the mountains of the Methow Valley in Washington State. Trained as a glassblower, she combines her intricate handmade vessels, reliquaries and hourglasses with urban and biological detritus, gears, clockworks, wax, dust and bones. Steampunk, airships, zoetropes, Wunderkammers, Victorian-era scientific apparatus, cricket cages, antique flying machines, nautical apparatus, lenses, corsets, the absurd and the uncanny inspire her aesthetic, as she explores themes of technology, biochronology, memory, absence and loss.
From April 30th until September 10th, Laurie Kain will be demonstrating glassblowing onboard the Celebrity Equinox in Italy, Greece, and Turkey. Check back on the journal for updates and photos, or visit me on Facebook: Laurie Kain Glass (
